I hope you’ve had a lovely Easter. Mine had its ups and downs, but thankfully the ups were very good indeed. We were in Lisbon for a week — we spent time with family and friends (not as many as we would have liked), ate local treats, visited museums and, the highest of highlights, we spent a day at the beach. No matter what other people say, for me there’s nothing like a Portuguese beach. They’re proper beaches: the endless coastline, the sea is so lively, the wind is invigorating and the air feels healthy. Somehow, when you’re in a Portuguese beach, feelings seem more intense, thoughts appear to be deeper and ideas look more exciting. Your head is lighter and your soul feels cleaner. There’s a mix of energy and tranquility, peace and hope, an almost overwhelming sense of freedom. Please tell me I’m not the only one who feels this!
Being in Portugal at this time of year is a true delight to the eyes. I’m always impressed with the sheer force of spring in Lisbon, with the meadows that come up in every bit of earth, in a crack of the sidewalk, on the roof of an abandoned house. Plants grow with joy and vigour in the mild Lisbon climate. Every little trip you take, wether its on foot or by car, no matter if you’re in the city centre or on the peripheries, is an opportunity to see dozens of plants in full flower. I went to see a friend who’s recently had a baby and took her a foraged bouquet of daisies, mallow, euphorbia and Judas tree blossom.
I also managed to quench my thirst for historic buildings and art by visiting a few museums and churches. I went back to the Casa-Museu Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves, which not only is filled with exceptional paintings, furniture and objects, it’s a house so much to my taste that I would move in tomorrow if I could. House museums really are the best. We went to the Museu de Arte Antiga to see the new Josefa de Óbidos, and the Church of Saint Roch smelt like greenery because of the Palm Sunday arrangements. It never ceases to amaze me how the senses of smell and hearing can elevate your experience of visiting a historic church…. it turns what at first may only seemed like a monument to be admired into a space that is properly alive.
Back home, there are also flowers in our garden. Back in autumn, when I placed my bulb order, I was inspired by 17th century Dutch still life paintings and chose the most flamboyant tulips in the catalogue. They look like they’ve been hand-painted!
After ruminating on it for many years, I’ve decided to sell the majority of my vintage sewing pattern collection. During the time that we lived in England and New Zealand, I bought a lot of patterns from markets and second-hand shops. I’ve used some of them and still plan to use a few more but I’ve definitely got a surplus of patterns. Even though they’re practically historic documents (the older ones are indeed that), they can very easily still be put to use. The styles I’ve selected are quite timeless and the quality of both the pattern and the instructions is very good. And the illustrations are irresistible! I’m gradually filling up my Instagram shop account with them. This account works just like a shop window: everything you see is for sale and I delete items as they sell. If you’re interested in buying any of the patterns, just leave a comment over there or send me a DM.
Until next week, keep well,
Constança
Vivan as praias do Atlántico Norte!
Saudades!!
