[scroll down for English]
I started the year without a single resolution. I’m by no means a systematic, organised person but I confess that, for a while, I succumbed the zeitgeist in our modern society that wants to convice us that productitity is what gives life its meaning (I disagree).
There were a few years when I made a list of resolutions (they tend to always be the same year after year). In 2020 I decided to be even more current and chose a word for the year. The word I picked in January of 2020 was… wait for it… HOME. 2020 was going to be the year when our house renovations would finally end, we’d no longer have to live in temporary accomodation (since we moved to Spain in 2018 we’ve lived in four different places) and I was going to put my heart and soul into creating a cosy, welcoming home environment for our family. It’s impossible for me not to laugh at the irony of this choice of word.
As I was saying, I started the year true to my essence. December gave way to January and nothing changed inside my head. Nevertheless, things around me were in a flurry of activity. I’ve already mentioned our renovations, I know. In 2019 this old house was subjected to a lot of work: the beams in the ground floor were replaced, half the windows were changed, we altered the entire layout of the bedrooms and put in new bathrooms. Then we naturally ran out of money. At the moment we’re in the midst of what what I’m pompously calling “the second phase of the renovations” because, to be perfectly honest, I foresee several phases… this house will need work during our entire lifetime and my plans are ambitious and never-ending.
Today is the 1st of February and I woke up in a reflective mood. I think never before have I had such an active January. For reasons I won’t bore you with (renovation delays, of course), around the 12th of January I was faced with the urgent need to paint and furnish three rooms before the 27th, the day when four of Tiago’s cousins would arrive for a long weekend (for anyone who doesn’t know us well, Tiago is my husband).
In the midst of all this, while I was in the shower one morning I suddently had the idea (which seemed brilliant at the time) to change rooms with the boys: I would get their playroom (a larger room in the attic) and they would get my sewing room (a smaller room next to their bedroom, where we’d be able to fit two desks where they could do their homework instead of using the dining table).
During those two weeks I sanded, vaccumed and washed a lot of bumpy walls and painted the little guest room dusty pink, the new sewing room aquamarine and the new playroom light blue. While I was dragging myself to finish these jobs — always focused on results, since I’m a product-not-process person, the men outside were inadvertently showing me how slow and inept I was at this whole thing by painting the whole house in the same amount of time it took me to paint a little room.
But everything got done in time, the cousins arrived, the house was clean and (moderately) tidy, the beds were made, the fridge was full and we were excited to have them. We spent a very intense, very happy (and very cold!) weekend. And the morning after they went home I felt the urge to completely change the furniture in our sitting room. It’s incredible what shifting a few things can do to a space… the energy of the room totally changed!
There’s still so much to do here but I feel like I took a huge step forward. There’s nothing like a deadline to make you move! I tend to find January particularly challenging: it’s dark, it’s cold, it feels endless. I’m usually one for emulating nature and hibernating but it’s dawning on me that all this activity made this month a lot lighter and more bearable.
I want to welcome you to this new newsletter. I happy to have you along for the ride!
