I’m in the midsts of an obsessive, fully immersive personal project.
I think about it all day long, I dream about it, and I’ve been spending every available minute I have working on it.
You see, I’ve long been an admirer of the 17th century Portuguese (or, to be more accurate, Portuguese-Spanish) painter Josefa de Óbidos. I’m inclined to discuss her at length with a friend of mine (hello, Tânia!), I routinely pore over her exhibition catalogues and I have a long wishlist of places I want to visit in order to see her paintings up close. As a student of the early Modern period and a passionate enthusiast of Baroque art, she and I are a natural fit. The fact that she was a (legally emancipated ) female painter 400 years ago, as well as her unashamed inclination for painting blowsy bows, sugary pastries and botanically correct depictions of Portuguese fauna and flora… well, that only adds to my fascination for her work.
A few weeks ago I had an idea. In order to achieve it, I’ll need to gather a lot of elements depicted in her paintings: several objects (like baskets, terracotta vessels, wooden boxes, silver and pewter plates and bowls) and lots and lots of flowers and fruit. And since there are no flowers in December, I’ve decided to make them. Out of paper.
If you want to follow alongside me on this journey, the best place for it is on my Instagram account, where I’ll be sharing the behind-the-scenes and the photos I’m taking of the finished flowers, bodegón-style, against a black piece of cloth.
Over the past weeks I’ve consulted history and botany books, watched lectures on the biblical symbolism of plants, dissected real flowers, searched for convent-made confectionary and sent countless messages to my very patient friend. The most fun bit has been trying to identify all the plants that Josefa painted, and the most challenging one has been making the paper flowers.
Since I’m rather a superstitious person, I won’t tell you just yet what the end-goal of this project will be, but it isn’t hard to guess.
Thank you for always being by my side!
Until next time, keep well,
